Baby Jenx rock the Button Factory

Baby Jenx live

First they progressed through one of the toughest qualifying heats to make it to the final of the GBOB Challenge Ireland 2008 at Dublin’s Button Factory. And now alternative rock band Baby Jenx have had the icing sloshed all over their proverbial cake by winning the final as well.

It was no mean feat. By all accounts, such was the quality of the bands in the final that any one of them could have been worthy winners. A large and extremely vocal crowd spurred the bands on and contributed to a very enjoyable evening for all involved.

Lady Fire winning

When rock band Lady Fire played their GBOB Challenge qualifying heat it was their first ever gig. And now their second gig has seen them win the Faroe Islands national final. Which means that their third gig will be the GBOB Challenge World Final in London.

And should they win the World Final, they will have done it by playing just two songs three times! With a first prize of $100,000 up for grabs, that means they will have earned over 4,000 dollars a minute!

Breakthrough for Broke City USA

15. November 2008

Broke City 1

Rock band Broke City are the winners of the GBOB Challenge USA 2008. Taking place at Chain Reaction, Los Angeles and streamed live on Notmtv, the final featured 11 bands from all over the country and places as far adrift as New Mexico and Alaska.

But there can be no two American cities as culturally adrift as Las Vegas and Salt Lake City. Surprising then, that a band comprised of members from both those cities should be such a seamless cohesive unit as Broke City. It was no walkover for them however, in a very tight competition. In the end the judges had just two points separating the top three bands, with metal band Theory of Hate from Anchorage in third place and funky rockers Bofus from Las Cruces in second.

GBOB suffers traffic jam

14. November 2008

Traffic jam

Our apologies go out to all visitors who were unable to access the GBOB website for several hours this morning. The problem arose because our servers couldn’t cope with an unexpectedly high surge in traffic and had the cyber equivalent of a mental breakdown. It seems that too many people were uploading mp3s and pictures at the same time.

But uploading stuff is what we want you to do so extra servers have been brought in to increase our capacity. And the existing servers were persuaded to return to work with promises of longer tea breaks and free back rubs. So hopefully all should be okay now.

The Leads lead the way in Scotland

The Leads Live

The Scottish final of the GBOB Challenge 2008 at Edinburgh’s Bongo club has been won by young Falkirk five-piece indie band The Leads. As one of the judges, Kane Mumford of cutting-edge culture magazine The Skinny, commented, “Out of 12 very good bands tonight, there were maybe one or two bands who owned the stage but The Leads stole the show.”

And so to London, joining the ranks of the up-and-coming music elite at the Scala for the GBOB Challenge World Finals, are David Brown (vocals), Gaz Hornsby (guitar/vocals), David Maley (bass/vocals), Stuart Taylor (guitar) and John Marshall (drums).
